Bus Drivers’ Ballot

Christchurch drivers were involved in a nation-wide ballot to decide whether they would continue to drive buses with recapped or retreaded front tyres, said the secretary of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union (Mr A. S. Roberts). But the problem was not an urgent one in Canterbury, he said, because the firms for which the union members worked did not use retreads on front wheels. The ballot was a result of a remit approved at the national conference of the New Zealand Drivers’ Association in April urging that the authorities prohibit the use of retreaded and recapped tyres on the front wheels of passenger-service vehicles. Members of the Christchurch Transport Board staff, who have their own union, are not involved in the ballot.
