MILK METERS IN SHEDS

Early Introduction Urged If herd testing was to be continued using modern dairying techniques it was quite obvious some device such as a milk meter, would be needed to obviate the use of buckets in a milking shed, the chairman of the South Island Herd Improvement Association (Mr J. G. Macartney) told the association’s annual meeting. Mr Macartney said buckets were acceptable in older types of milking sheds, but with the advent of more modern “herring-bone” sheds a milk meter was needed. He said the association was anxious to get some meter used in the field. “We cannot wait for years for something to come on to the market,” he said.

Several types of milk meters were being tested at present, but none was yet up to the standard required for use in the field, said the Dairy Board’s director of herd improvement (Mr J. Stichbury).
