GYMNASIUM AT SCHOOL
Tenders To Be CaUed Plans and specifications for the proposed new gymnasium at Riccarton High Sciool were satisfactory, and tenders could be called, a meeting of the school's board of governors was informed by the Education Department. The estimated cost of the gymnasium was £16,580 and the subsidy would be £9OOO, the letter said. Board members expressed gratification that such a stage had been reached, but agreed with the headmaster (Mr A. J. Gainsford) that the impetus of the project must be maintained. The department of education had approved a grant of £4OO for interior painting and a grant of £468 for exterior painting ait the school, the board was told. In his report Mr Gainsford said 10 Teachers’ College students had just finished a months’ teaching section at the school, and he felt both they and the school had gained from their presence. There had been a good response to teacher recruitment at the school and 12 applications at least had been made by pupils.
