HOSPITAL CORNER

Suggestion By Doctor When the corner buildings of the Christchurch Hospital were puUed down they should be rebuilt a good distance from the footpath to leave room for lawns, gardens, and trees, said Dr. W. I. Paterson, the deputy medical super-intendent-in-chief. Dr. Paterson said that this would compensate for the open spaces and trees that would be lost when the first stage of the rebuilding programme began near the river. “It will be much more attractive for anyone going out of the city through Riccarton avenue if this is done,” he said. However, rebuilding at the corner was probably 50 years away, because those buildings could not be pulled down while they still had some value to the hospital. When they were rebuilt, they would probably have to be 10 or more storeys high, he said. The present buildings were of six storeys.
