‘TERRIBLY IN THE RED’
Sutherland’s Season (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 22 J. C. Williamson Theatres Ltd., was “terribly in the red” over the current opera season in which Joan Sutherland was appearing, the managingdirector, Mr John McCailub, said yesterday. “Many people are regarding this as a Sutherland-only season when it is not,” he said Every singer brought to Australia was a singer in his or her own right, but on nonSutherland night audiences were small, said Mr McCallum. “Financially we are terribly in the red over the opera and I don’t mind saying so,” he said. “Not only are we embarrassed at the non-Sutherland nights, but the artists are appalled. “They see people hanging from the ceiling on Sutherland nights and then only 300 attending on other nights. Mr McCallum was discussing a report that some music students were disappointed at not receiving ticket concessions to hear the great arias so often set for competitive work. Ticket concessions for music students apply only for those operas in which Joan Sutherland does not appear.
