Soil Erosion

Sir, —“Factual” states that he would like to hear more facts from farmers rather than opinions from visitors. He does not realise that the facts published by local and overseas experts are largely gained through consultation with many high-country runholders. The average farmer is familiar only with the erosion occurring on his own farm, but the experts who travel all over the high country can provide a much clearer picture of the erosion occurring there. "Factual" says that erosion is overemphasised by misleading photographs. How can photographs do this? They can only show what is there. He says we should think about economy and using nature to the full. Where does our economy come from? All New Zealand’s primary products, mutton, wool, dairy produce, etc., come directly from the land. Where is our economy going to come from if our soil continues to dissapear at its present alarming rate? If preventing erosion is not economy, what is?—Yours, etc., JIM HILTON. July 23, 1965.
