£7m FOR NEW RAIL WAGGONS

(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, July 22. The Railways Department planned to spend £7,000,000 on new waggons, the assistant manager, Mr I. Thomas, said in Rotorua today.

Mr Thomas was addressing the Bulk Fertiliser Association conference.

He said that over the next four or five years the Railways Department would “retire or throw out” about 2000 waggons a year that were 40 years old. Even by getting rid of so many old waggons, there would remain 4000 waggons more than 40 years old. (The railways have 32,000 waggons.) Mr Thomas said in years gone by many old waggons should have been thrown out instead of repaired. Over the next few T years the department would take delivery of thousands of new waggons.

He said his department was about to make a survey of State mines, fertiliser manufacturers and large operators to find out the future demand for waggons. The men carrying out the survey would investigate what type of waggons would be more suited for the work of these operators. Speaking of the need for special waggons. Mr Thomas said a multi-purpose waggon that could be used to carry coal, lime, fertiliser and rock phosphate was desirable. It would be about two years before this type of waggon was in use.
