QUILTS FROM RED CROSS

Assistance To New Nations Thirty-six quilts, the first of a consignment of 550, are being sent this week to Wellington by the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society. This marks the beginning of the International Red Cross five-year plan to offer help to Red Cross organisations in new nations. A naw aspect of social work will be dealt with each year, and this year’s subject is “Health Education.” Junior members of the branch knitted peggy squares to make most of the quilts, though some were made by adults. The 550 quilts required are in addition to those sent regularly to such needy areas as Korea and Hong Kong. The branch will also provide 500 health kits for overseas. These are made up of a face cloth, nail-brush, towel, soap, and a comb in a drawstring bag bearing the Red Cross emblem. Other kits to be sent are sports kits with skipping ropes and balls which will be used for physiotherapy, and stationery sets which will go to children in Red Cross homes and orphanages.
