NO POLITICS TILL 1966
Mr McCallum’s Decision (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 21. If the president of Federated Farmers, Mr E. W. McCallum, entered politics, it would not be before he ceased to be president, he told the federation’s annual conference today. He is offering himself for re-election as president at tomorrow’s session of the conference. He told a questioner at today’s session that he would not think about a political career until July, 1966, but the General Election would not be until October or November and he could not say what the position would be then. Mr McCallum said that he was under heavy pressure to ente politics, but he saw himself as a doubtful starter. Mr McCallum lives In Hawera in the Egmont electorate, whose sitting member, Mr W. A. Sheat, has announced that he will retire next year. Mr McCallum was a candidate for the Egmont National Party nomination in 1957, but was defeated by Mr Sheat.
