EDUCATION ACT
Operation On September 1? The new consolidated Education Act. passed by Parliament last year, will probably come into force on September 1. No date was prescribed in the act. The reason for the delay is that four major sets of regulations bad, consequentially, to be amended and consolidated, and these will be Gazetted in a few weeks. Meanwhile there has been some anticipation of the provisions of the new act.
Locally, the Christchurch Post-primary Schoo’s’ Council almost immediately changed ’<‘s name to -he Christchurch Secondary Schools’ Council. “Secondary” has come into vogue again since multi-course hi ch schools have introduced some techn’cal subjects and technical colleges have been graded as technical institutes. “Postjprimary” was used until recently to cover both categories. The new Wellington telephone directory also has anticipated changes in the titles of principal! officers of the Education Act. ft uses those to be introduced in September.
The Director of Education (Mr A. E. Campbell) will become director-general; the assistant director, professional (Dr. K. J. Sheen) will become assistant directorgeneral, professional: the assistant director (administrative) (Mr A. N. V. Dobbs) will become assistant direc-tor-general. administrative. The chief inspector of primary schools (Mr B. M. Pinder) will become director of primary education; the chief inspector of postprimary schools (Mr J. L. Hunter) will become director of secondary schools; the superintendent of technical educatiion (Dr. B. C. Lee) will become director of technical education; and the superintendent of child welfare (Mr L. G. Anderson) will become director of child welfare.
