AQUATIC CLUB IMPROVEMENTS

Ellesmere Council To Assist Assistance to having electricity made available at the club’s premises, Lakeside Domain, was sought at a meeting of the Ellesmere County Council this week by Messrs V. Harkerss and R. Butler, a deputation from the Ellesmere Aquatic Club. It was explained by the deputation that the club had spent about £lOOO in improvements, including the provision of a modem club house. For a time electricity had been supplied by a generator, but this had not proved satisfactory because of condensation. The Central Canterbury Power Board was prepared to run its lines a distance of about 50 chains to reach the club’s premises, but it required a guarantee of £5O a year for 10 years. It was felt that this was more than the club could afford. The club was warmly appreciative of the help it had received from the council. Members of the council said that the club had performed. useful service in keeping the domain in tidy condition. It had also fostered the increasingly popular sport of water ski-ing and boattog. catering for local and outside enthusiasts. It was agreed to contribute £25 annually toward the guarantee required. Another request concerned a cattle stop at the domain entrance. This had proved inadequate because of its width and cattle had destroyed shrubs planted by the club. The engineer was instructed to increase the width of the cattle stop. Flats At Lincoln A comprehensive report was received from the council's town and country planning advisers concerning the conditions relating to the proposed erection of flats in Lincoln for use by college students. Councillors expressed concern that insistence on stringent conditions could result in the abandonment of the proposal. After some discussion the engineer (Mr P. Macfarlane) and the health and building inspector (Mr R. W. Sharpite) were asked to prepare a set of conditions which would ensure that the proposed building complied with the council’s requirements. These would be discussed by the council's planning committee and the town planning consultant and later submitted to the builder. The Lincoln Community Centre Committee, which has been interested in the flats proposal, is to be invited to confer in any future discussions.
