Americans’ Ist Defeat
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 21. Playing in atrocious conditions. the touring University of California Rugby team met defeat for the first time on its Australian tour when it lost, 3-5, to Sydney University today. The ground carried inches of surface water in parts and was inches deep in mud in others. Water buckets were stationed at intervals along the touchlines to allow the □layers to clear the mud from their eyes. Sydney scored a converted try early in the second half, S. Boyce, the Wallaby winger, going over in the corner to complete a movement which started on the American team's 25-yard line. S. Boland converted with a fine kick.
