TWO HURT ON WHARF

Cargo Sling Collapses Two men were injured al Lyttelton yesterday when a cargo sling collapsed and the bags it contained crashed to the wharf decking. The injured men are Ivan Francis Carson, aged 51, of Reserve terrace, a Lyttelton Borough Council waterman w’ho suffered head injuries, and John Finney, aged 46, of 45 Exeter street, Lyttelton, a watersider. who also suffered head injuries. Both men were examined by a doctor and taken to hospital in Christchurch where they were admitted. Their condition last night was satisfactory. The accident occurred about 9 a.m. when a sling being used to lift 11 150ib bags of pollard into the No 1 batch of the Japanese freighter, Tokuwa Mani, moored at Gladstone pier collapsed and the falling bags injured the two men. Charles Oscar William Salander, aged 56, of 763 Ferry road, a watereider, was s'rock on the right knee about 1.30 p.m. when a rope and hook being used at Lyttelton to move railway waggons slipped. .After examination by a doctor, Mr Seiander was taken to Christchrch Hospital where he was operated on.
