“Dangers Of Democracy”
Sir, —I beg no questions, and it is wrong of Mr Bray to say so. Let me make it clear: I firmly believe in twoparty democracy, particularly supporting the caucus system which ensures that a candidate who is elected on a promise is kept to that promise by party discipline. Further let me say that 1 would rather live in New Zealand, under the present Government, with Which I disagree on many points, than anywhere else on earth. 1 am loyal to the Government, whatever its colour; 1 will do my duty conscientiously even to participating in a war which I, personally, may think unjust, and despite the knowledge that others will be shirking their duty by cunning. Yes; my country right or wrong! The real dangers of democracy are inherent in the freedoms it bestows, permitting advocacy of cynical imitations which could destroy it.—Yours, VARIAN J. WILSON. July 21. 1965.
