MAGNET AT HOSPITAL
New One May Be Bought The North Canterbury Hospital Board has been asked to replace the giant magnet used in the eye department at the Christchurch Hospital with a more modern piece of equipment. The magnet, used for extracting metal fragments from the eye, was installed tn 1946. Dr. L. Burns, who is in charge of the eye department, said yesterday that the magnet now in use had proved most satisfactory, but the one for which approval was being sought would be more easily manipulated. It had an improved method of counter-balancing which produced almost finger-tip control. It was possibly also a little more powerful. The electromagnet itself would be about lOin square. Dr. Burns said the present magnet would be kept as a spare.
