Thirsty Work

fN.Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND, July 21. The St. John Ambulance Association’s mobile canteen closed its shutters at 2 p.m. today after being open for 34 hours. The association’s staff served 70 gallons of soup, 7000 cups of tea, 600 meat pies and 50 dozen scones to police, prison guards and soldiers during the emergency at the Auckland prison. Worried Passengers on a flight from Wellington to Auckland yesterday had a bird’s eye look at the prison fire and riot. The pilot’s announcement over the address system had made a recently-arrived young Australian very jumpy. Telling passengers of the commotion, the pilot said that “Mount Eden was on fire” and that he would bank the aircraft to let them get a goad view. In view of the New Zealand reputation in Australia as the “shaky isles” and the recent Taranaki earthquake, the Australian was alarmed. “I though the pilot meant Mt. Eden was a volcano and it was erupting,” he said. “I thought Auckland was having an earthquake. I was hoping it would go away before we landed.” He was relieved when he found out what Mt. Eden meant. Condition Fair Bam Ladette, a prisoner who suffered a ruptured spleen and facial injuries during a fracas in the gaol yesterday afternoon, is in a fair condition in Auckland Hospital today. In Court Two men who were in prison on remand on charges relating to the Avondale bank robbery when rioting broke out yesterday had given themselves up, their counsel, Mr P. B. Tiem, told Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M. The men, Daniel Huntwell McMillan, aged 28, and David Harley Western, aged 20, who did not appear, were further remanded in custody to next Tuesday when the Magistrate'! Court hearing of charges against them will begin. Catherine Barbara Western, aged 25, a housewife, who. with the men, faces a joint charge of robbing Jeffrey Lynn Julian and Murray James Ness of £15,273, the property of the Bank of New Zealand, was also remanded to next Tuesday. Her bail was continued.

No Witness The prison rioting in Auckland had a side effect on the Court of Arbitration sitting in Wellington today. An Auckland fireman was to have attended the hearing to give evidence in a dispute over the working hours and conditions of New Zealand firemen. But telegraphed advice to the Court this morning said that because of the Mount Eden trouble, all leave had been cancelled for northern firemen and the witness was unable to make the trip.
