ESCAPE FEAR
Request To Public (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 20. Fearing a late night escape bid, Detective Inspector R. J. Walton ordered the public, which had crammed every vantage point since early in the day, to be held back to Khyber Pass road. This was soon after 8 o’clock.
In spite of repeated requests over loudspeakers on traffic cars at the scene, police had considerable difficulty restraining the crowds. An appeal for the public to keep away was broadcast but did not prevent the scene of searchlights, smoke and medieval battlements from being the bigges* attraction in the city. Thousands of cars crawled bumper-to-bumper up and down Khyber Pass road trying to get a glimpse of the scene.
Hundreds of cars drove to the top of Mount Eden.
