WOOLMARK BOOSTS RAW WOOL SALES
Proof that the International Wool Secretariat’s Woolmark campaign is raising wool consumption comes from Germany, says the Wool Board’s information service.
A survey recently carried out by the German branch of the secretariat showed that 71 per cent of all women's coats made in West Germany last year were of wool. German ready-to-wear manufacturers produced 12.1 million women’s coats last year, and of these 7.4 million were of pure new wool. The basis of the German survey was a questionnaire sent to all weavers licensed in the country to use Woolmark. These weavers employ almost 90 per cent of the workers in the country’s cloth and garment industry. Fifty-seven per cent of the weavers confirmed that the proportion of pure virgin wool cloth in their coming autumn-winter collections would be considerably more than that used in last year’s. This was mainly attributed to the advent of Woolmark
and guarantees for pure wool products. The mark was said to have brought about a general revival in the demand for wool and a resurgence of trade in pure wool goods by most firms. (Footnote. —The first Woolmark licence for New Zealand was recently issued by the Wool Board to an Auckland carpet company.)
