Council Wants Information Consideration should be j given to rating relief for age i beneficiaries who had no income other than their age (benefit and superannuation and. say, £lO a year interest, the finance committee said in I a report to the Christchurch ' City Council. As the council had no simple means of determining who would qualify, the City I Treasurer (Mr L. A. G. Rich) had been authorised to eni close a memorandum with . the rate demands this year seeking the information. The committee emphasised that the present proposal related only to the obtaining of information. The chairman of the committee (Cr. H. P. Smith) said the council was purely at the exploratory stage. Some persons thought that relief was being given. The Mayor (Mr G. Manning): Yes, this is a big subject. We don’t want to buoyup their hopes. “The rates are also a burden on young people," Cr. P. J. Skellerup said. “This is fraught with danger, and we should venture into it with caution. 1 agree that pensions are inadequate, but that is a matter for the Government.”
