Team Capt. Suspended M. Opie, the captain of the Shirley senior-reserve team, was stood down for two playing Saturdays, at a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The referee. Mr R. I. McDonald, said Opie had used u-—.rs<o language on the field in nis side’s game against Marist, “During the second spell I gave a penalty against the Shirley team and I heard Opie say ‘What a of a decision.’ I then took the penalty up a further 10 yards, warning Opie at the same time,” said Mr McDonald in his report to the union. “Opie then shouted out, loud enough to be heard from the side-line: ‘What a stupd of a referee.’ “I immediately ordered Opie from the field of play. “The match was full of small incidents, and complaints about my decisions. All of this was coming from the Shirley team, but, after the ordering-off, the match developed into a good game of Rugby with no further incidents at all.” Opie said he had received no warning and that he had endeavoured to control his team. He considered it a dirtygame and that it was not entirely Shirley’s fault.
