'TODAY marks the opening of the new Raceway Motors, Ltd., service station 1 at the intersection of Lincoln road and Jerrold street. Complete with all the latest features, the station is designed to provide quick, clean and efficient service for the city’s growing population of cars.

The new Raceway Motors is a large building of concrete block and steel framing, and stands on a large area of sealed ground that provides a generous amount of space for the parking of Customers’ cars before and after servicing. The proprietor, Mr J. Hutchinson, took over the site, and its old wooden service station, in September last year. Not long after, in November, a start was made on the construction of the new braiding. The Molding is about 2500 sq ft in area, and there is room for extensions if they are never needed. However, at present the building seems large enough, there is plenty of space, and ail the working and service areas ate very light and airy. At the eastern end of the new service station is a large sealed forecourt area, which is in front of the two large metal doors opening into the main working bay area. This working area can hold four cars, and is complete with the latest equipment, including a hydraulic hoist and one of the new sliding rail pits.

The “sliding rail” is in effect an iron beam about 18 inches wide, and this takes the wheels on one side of a car. To allow for differences in car widths the rail or beam can be slid across much of the width of the pit. So long is the pit that two cars can be greased on it at the same time. West of the working area is the service station office, and also a locker room and a large kitchen and eating area for staff. Further along from the

office, and opening off it, is the main display area where a wide range of the more common spare parts and accessories, together with with many ear-care preparations, is on view. Further along still is the tyre and battery bay. This serves as a storeroom for the comprehensive range of batteries, and is also equipped with a tyre balancer, repair equipment and a hydraulic tyre remover. At the west end of the building is another wide sealed area and toilet facilities for customers.

A car washing area is also situated at the west end of the service station, and it Will at first be equipped with a pressure water-air gun. Later more comprehensive car washing equipment may be installed. The service station has four petrol pumps (two for 83 octane and two for 96 octane), a kerosene pump, and a diesel pump. The service Station will concentrate on lubrication, petrol and accessory and minor servicing rather than more major repawn.

There are two assistants apart from Mr Hutahinson, although there is not a mechanic on duty. Such items as warrant of fitness repairs, headlight aiming and replacement and so On are dealt with in the working area. Before Mr Hutchinson took over Raceway Motors he was employed by Midland Motorways Services, Ltd., in the rental car branch. The service station will be open seven days a week. Monday to Thursday and Saturday it will be open from 7.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Fridays it will be open from 7.30 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Sundays it will be open

from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. These hours may be altered later if it is found necessary.
