SCHOOL FEES

Compulsion Opposed A system of compulsory school fees as levied by secondary schools—an idea put forward by the Aranui School Committee—was rejected by the Canterbury School Committees’ Association. Some delegates said their committees were completely opposed to such a system. Speakers who supported a motion that the Government be asked to give school committees the right to charge school fees said that if parents would not pay something voluntarily towards primary schools, they should be compelled to do so. There was already virtually a compulsory levy at intermediate schools, said one speaker. Another said that kindergarten and play centres charged fees. Opposition the motion, Mr K. I. Pillidge (Shirley) asked how it was proposed to enforce a compulsory levy. “New Zealand is already overburdened with inspectors,” he said. Mrs M. G. Metcalf (Waltham) said it was a bad thing for primary school children to be pressed to see that their Barents paid up. She described a case in which, she said, pressure had been put on the children in this direction. The motion was heavily defeated.
