WASTED TIME ON WHARVES
“Watersiders Not To Blame” Watersiders were not to blame for unproductive time on the waterfront, said the secretary of the Lyttelton Waterfront Workers’ Union (Mr R. Fergus). He was commenting on a report last week in which the Waterfront Industry Commission said that half of the time for which watersiders were paid was unproductive. Mr Fergus said that time checks on the m.v. Pateke over the last two days revealed that delays were not attributed to waterside workers. An average of about three hours 20 minutes a gang a day was spent waiting for trucks to arrive. “This ship is by no means an isolated case and it has not been cited because it is exceptional,” he said.
