SILVER IN COINAGE

£2m. Worth (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 15. The silver in the current coinage was probably worth about £2 million, said the annual report of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research tabled in Parliament today. But the silver is only about 10 per cent of the total weight and only a fifth of the coins contain silver, said the report. Because reclamation of the silver with the coming of decimal currency would be easier if the silver coins were treated separately, the department had devised a magnetic method of separating coins containing silver. The balance of the "silver” coinage, containing threequarters copper and quarter nickel, can be used again immediately for making further coins.
