Wife-Beating Discussed
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, July 14. The Maori Women's Welfare League conference in Palmerston North today discussed remits on wife-beating and cruelty to children. The Justice Department stated that the maximum penalties for cruelty to wives was two years and five in the case of a child. The Department told the conference that any increase in penalties would not act as a deterrent. The conference agreed that the penalties enforced were adequate, but asked that steps be taken to see that all members were made aware of the legal position.
