Woman Again Succeeds In Bacon Competition

One of the few women who entered the Canterbury-West Coast bacon competition. Mrs J Bassett, of Oxford, achieved another notable success in the annual event held yesterday at the Belfast works of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. For the second successive vear Mrs Bassett won both the Pig Marketing Association’s Rosebowl, judged on prolifacy, growth rate, and carcases quality and the Peerless Weaner Grower Cup for the heaviest litter at eight weeks old. Mrs Bassett also took second place in the P.M.A. Rosebowi class I ast year she tied for first place in the P.M.A. Rosebowl section with E. A. Bennett, and she also won the Peerless Cup and was second in the Green’s Challenge Cup. Entries in this year’s competition totalled 83 —17 below last year’s figure and 35 below the 1963 entries. Competitors were from Canterbury, the We7t Coast, and Rai Valley. One reason for the lower entries was that there had been considerably more on-the-farm buying this year, said one of the judges.
