NEWSPAPER COMMENT

(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 15. New York morning newspapers today paid warm editorial tribute to Adlai Stevenson.

The “Herald Tribune” described Mr Stevenson as “an extraordinary man.” And the “Daily News.” though saying it did not approve of him as a Presidential candidate, said.

“His death comes as a sad blow. In recent' years he had performed brilliantly as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations.” The “New York Times” said: “The qualities that come to mind make up one of the most delightful and intelligent men of our time: perceptive and urbane, thoughtful and articulate, courageous and sensitive, humble and sophisticated ... he was a man of the world, often more honoured and appreciated abroad than he was at home. In London, “The Times" said: “His life has left a mark that will not be eradicated. Abroad he came to represent that aspect of his country which most sustains foreign confidence in the fundamental virtue of its intentions, even when actions seem wrong. “Through all the placid confidence of the Eisenhower era and the clumsy crusades of Mr Dulles, he reminded

the world that there was another America sensitive, self-critical, thoughtful and visionary. “At home he kept the light of intellect burning through a period when it was not fashionable to think.” The British national newspapers all paid editorial tribute to Mr Stevenson, praising his qualities as a man, administrator and statesman.
