HEART OF GOLD AND BAGS OF BANK NOTES
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) COLUMBIA (S. Carolina), July 15. A man with a heart of gold and several bags of one-dollar notes cleaned out the Columbia City gaol yesterday by paying 1450 dollars to bail out 45 fellow prisoners. “I just don’t like to see people in gaol,” explained James M. Braziel. "It’s a terrible way they treat you. I don’t like it and I wanted to
get those other guys out.” Braziel. who is aged 45, said he is a former Air Force major. He stunned policemen at the gaol by appearing repeatedly with bags of money to pay off bonds and fines. He virtually cleaned out the cells over a two-day period. Braziel had himself been bailed out of the lock-up on Tuesday by a lawyer after being booked
on charges of disorderly conduct and possessing an unlawful weapon. He returned to the gaol later in the afternoon with a bag full of onedollar notes. He also brought along the names of fellow prisoners which they had scribbled on box tops and scraps of paper given him the night before. The first sack of money ran out and Braziel asked officers to “wait a minute.*’ He went outside and brought in another sack full of money.
