Supreme Court WESTPORT RAPE

Remanded For Observation When William Nelson Brokenshire, aged 20, a miner, appeared in the Supreme Court for sentence yesterday on a charge of raping a girl at Westport on June 12 he was further remanded till August 16. Brokenshire pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in the Westport Magistrate’s Court. Mr Justice Wilson was on the bench. Mr N. R. Morgan appeared for the Crown, and Mr B. J. Drake for Brokenshire. Mr Drake sought a further remand, giving as reasons the medical report on Brokenshire from the Seaview Hospital, Hokitika, and Brokenshire’s statement to the police about requiring medical assistance. Mr Drake submitted that it would be in the interests of justice as well as in Brokenshire’s interests that he be remanded for a report urider the Mental Health Act. His Honour remanded Brokenshire for a month for observation. William Henry Keith Boon (Mr Drake); Pamela Doris Sheridan (Mr Drake) v. Bernard Sheridan.
