PUNCHED-CARD SHOPPING was introduced for the first time in Britain with the opening of Scott’s Easyshop in Wallasey, northern England. Under each article is a batch of punched cards, and the customer picks up one or more from below the articles of her choice. When she has run through her list, she takes the selected cards to the tabulator which prints her bill. This carries a tear-off slip showing the total to be paid. TOP LEFT: A customer studies the guide to shoppers. TOP RIGHT: She takes a holder for her cards. BOTTOM LEFT: A clerk feeding cards into the tabulator. BOTTOM RIGHT: The customer is handed the detailed invoice.
