Functions Today

A series of preliminary functions and events which are invariably associated with New Zealand championship ploughing matches will get under way in Ashburton tomorrow.

At 11 a.m. visiting ploughmen and ploughing officials will be received by the Mayor of Ashburton, Mr J. Davidson. At 1.30 p.m. there will be a parade along East street, the main thoroughfare of Ashburton, from the intersection of that street and Walnut avenue to the intersection with South street. Arranged by a sub-committee of the Rakaia Ploughing Match Association, it will feature old and new farm machinery and implements, and

will include the 22 finalists in the ploughing championships on their tractors led by last year’s champion, Mr E. J. Croy, and also some of the entrants in the Silver Plough Queen contest. The Ashburton Silver Band will also take part.

At 5 p.m. there will be a dedication service for the Atlantic Silver Plough at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church. The service will be conducted by the Vicar of Ashburton, Archdeacon H. G. Norris, and taking part in the service will be the Vicar of Rakaia, the Rev. K. A. Robinson. The lesson will be read by the president of the New Zealand Ploughing Association, Mr G. L. A. Donald, of Takapau.
