World Match In 1967

The world ploughing championships are to be held in New Zealand in May, 1967. The governing board of the World Ploughing Organisation has allocated the world championships after that held in Norway this year to New Zealand, and the executive of the New Zealand Ploughing Association has voted in favour of the match being held in May of 1967 in preference to the spring of next year or 1967.

Already the site for this match has been fixed. It is between Prebbleton and Lincoln about 10 miles from Cathedral Square. In a world contest the competitors have to plough both stubble and grassland and the stubble ploughing area will be on the property of Mr J. F. Smith and the grassland on the property of Mr R. W. Wilson, Which is leased to Mr G. J. Barclay. In every way this site is considered quite an admirable one for the world match and Mr T. F. Carter, immediate past president of the New Zealand Ploughing Association, said recently

that from the point of view of the land and soil he did not think that a better site would be obtained anywhere in the world. There were roads on two sides of it, it was beautifully dry and it was the type of land that would not have a stone on it unless it had been carted there.

In the event of it being dry before the match, Mr Carter said he understood that it would be possible to get water at 60ft so it would be possible to irrigate the area if need be. With hotel development going on in Christchurch, which was handy to Harewood international airport, Mr Carter said that he felt that the accommodation position would also be as good as anywhere in the world.

Mr Carter said recently that the exact dates for the match would depend on arrangements with Lincoln College, where it is planned to accommodate ploughmen and their managers. The principal of the college. Dr. M. M. Burns, said this week that it was likely to be about the middle of May. Mr Carter said he thought that probably not more than 30 ploughmen would come from overseas for the match, with some of the countries which normally send two ploughmen to a world match possibly only sending one on this occasion because of the distances to be travelled, but when he was overseas last year with the New Zealand champion ploughman at the world match in Austria, Mr E. A. E. Fairhail, junior vice-president of the association, had learned that Denmark was then in the process of seeking money to send two ploughmen to the South Pacific. It is Mr Carter’s feelir

ir cer’s feeling that the party staying at the

college, which will become the headquarters for the world match, will number about 100. The college is about two miles from the match site. Dr. Burns had assured them that the college would be able to provide practice ground for the visiting ploughmen, Mr Carter said. For two days after the world match the governing board of the World Ploughing Organisation will meet. On the match site Mr Carter expects that it will be possible to stage a display of machinery similar to that seen at a Christchurch show. The cairn of peace, which is erected on the match site out of blocks of stone contributed by competing countries, is likely to be located at the corner of Robinsons road and Springs road. There is a possibility that

the 1967 New Zealand championships to select the man to represent this country at the world match in Rhodesia in 1968 will also be held in conjunction with this match, possibly on the day before.
