£20,000 Front.—With final returns yet to come from Queensland and Victoria, the Australian Rugby Union is hopeful of clearing £20,000 from the recent six-match tour by the Springboks. Cycling Record.—G. Ursl, of Italy, set a world cycling record for SOOO metres on Tuesday by clocking 6min Kt.7sec a! Rome. The previous record was 6min 13.4 sec. Curtain-Raiser.—Shirley Boys' High School defeated ’ Xavier College, 18-8. in a curtain-raiser to the South Africa-New Zealand Juniors match at Lancaster Park yesterday. Broken Cheekbone.—The Auckland forward. L. W. Fell, was making good progress after two operations for a broken cheek bone, his wife reported yesterday. He had been admitted to hospital with a suspected fractured skull, but an examination had diagnosed a broken cheekbone. Buller Team.—The Buller team to play Canterbury B as a curtain-raiser to the South African-Canterbury match at Lancaster Park on July 24 is: R. Dawe, G. Allen, W. Forsyth (captain), B. Stack, K. Blair, L. Halsall, 11. Geddes. T. Crad dock, O. Nahr, W. Duncan, G. Broderick, G. Wood, J. Smith, B. Roche, W. Boswell. Tour do France. —G. Karstens (Holland) yesterday won the twenty-first and penultimate stage of the Tour de France cycle race, from Auxerre to Versaille (141 miles). The tour* ends in Paris today. World Cup.—The total receipts from next year's World Cup soccer finals in England may exceed £2,000,000, it was reported by the English Football Association yesterday.
Walker Leads Hockey XI H. Walker (Rawhlti) will captain the Canterbury women's hockey team at the national tournament at Stratford, from August 28 to September 4. The team, announced yesterday, is: B. Makinson (Digbys, vicecaptain), J. Murray (Harewood), D. Quinn (Digbys). M. Bruhns (Carlton), J. Capstick (Hincmoa), L. Watson (Harewood), S. Comer (Carlton), A.
