With a 69 in the first round, Sota led at the half-way mark by one stroke from Legrange who added a 67 to his 65. Sharing third place, on 136, are Peter Thomson, the new British Open champion, and John Hayes, of South Africa. Thomson followed a 66 w T ith a 70 and Hayes had a 69 yesterday. At the sixteenth green a small group of spectators was ■watching with a notable lack

• of excitement the trio ahead t of Sota putt when Sebastion - Miguel, also of Spain, decided - to wave Sota to play his sec- ! ond shot. • He did this not because he thought Sota would reach the , green on the 556-yard hole, : but to ensure that he was : not disturbed by the sound . of a ball dropping short. Sota was forced to aim at ■ the hole quite blind, because I the party ahead of him did . not replace the flag. i After the shot the ball i came on, maintaining its pace well as it breasted the slope . and ran into the hole—giving ; Sota the hole in two and an : albatross.
