TRANSFER OF GAMES
Basketball Ruling
Although opinions were divided, the executive of the Canterbury Basketball Association carried a motion moved by the secretary, Mrs P. Murdoch, which sought to have games set down for badly-affected grass courts transferred to asphalt courts.
Mrs A. Elder said the executive was overdoing Its concern for lower grade players and that slipping and sliding in the mud was a natural hazard In a winter sport. Supporting Mrs Elder, other speakers felt a change of time and change of court would confuse teams “which probably wouldn't turn up at the amended time.” When the motion was carried, It was agreed that 16 games, mostly affecting teams In leading positions In their section, be played on asphalt courts, these games to start at 12 noon on Saturday when tenth round matches for grass courts would be played. It was further agreed to spread sawdust around goal areas on other grass courts.
The registration steward (Miss B. Armstrong) was instructed to deduct competition points from any team found playing fourth grade players in fifth grade, and such teams will lose fur ther points if the players' names are incorrect. Instances of these offences have been reported and the rule is to be strictly enforced. So that referees and players who wish to see the Canterbury v. Springbok game on July 24 may be free, the executive agreed to play all competition games in the morning on that day. First round games will start at 9.30 a m., second round at 10.20 a.m.. third round at 11.10 a.m., and fourth round at 12 noon.
