FRENCH AND ENGLISH

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LAE, July 13. A Fijian delegate, Ratu K. K. T. Mara suggested at the South Pacific Conference at Lae today that English and French should be taught in all Pacific territories. Ratu Mara said language seemed to be a formidable barrier in the work of the South Pacific Commission. The commission’s official languages are English and French. Ratu Mara made his suggestion during discussion on the commission’s social development programme. Dr. Richard Seddon, the commission’s executive officer for social development, said: “Until we have mastered a single language in primary schools I think we should be defeating our own purpose if we introduced a second language at this stage.”
