GOOD SPEED ON ICE
Chch. Skaters Dominate (N.Z,. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 12. Firm but heavy ice greeted competitors in the New Zealand long track speed skating championships which began at the Manorburn Dam today. As in the New Zealand figure and free skating championships. Christchurch competitors do minated the entries, and today took all but one of the title events decided. This went to W. Belt, of Alexandra, who outpaced the section to win the men's 500 metres title. Since 1960 the speed skaters have been racing "against the clock” in a bld to' lift New Zealand standards to a comparison with world times. The effects of this was seen today when in spite of the heavy ice on which the dedicated speed men had spent considerable time scraping off an overcoat of snow good times were returned in all events. In the titles decided today the Christchurch skater, R Talkingham, who last week had won Canterbury speed titles, and set a New Zealand record for the 5000 metres, had almtgt a second to spare in the New Zealand 5000 metre titles from R Montgomery. Falklngham will be a favourite for the 10,000 metres event tomorrow. Results: Men Senior 500 Metres.—W. Belt (Alexandra), Sl.Ssec, 1; R. Montgomery (Ch. Ch. 53.7, 2; J. Havenaar (Ch. Ch. 53.7, 3.
