Devastating Pair

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAINT NOM LA BRETECHE July 13.

The Australian, Peter Thomson, fresh from his victory in the British Open last week showed the same devastating form in the first round of the French Open yesterday—but it was not good enough to give him the lead.

Thomson carded a recordequalling seven-under par 66 and led until South Africa’s Cobie le Grange sizzled in shortly afterwards eight strokes off par for a 65—a new record. Another South African, J. Hayes, is third on 67. Le Grange had eight birdies, Thomson had four.
