Television cameras made their first appearance in the Chamber yesterday to record the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) on his return after a month’s absence overseas.
He tabled a White Paper on New Zealand assistance to Vietnam. The annual reports of the Railways Department and the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council were also tabled. The Rating Amendment Bill and the Valuation of Land Amendment Bill were given a second reading and referred to the Local Bills Committee. The Harbours Amendment Bill and the Post Office Amendment Bill were both given second readings. The second reading debate of the 1 Adoption Amendment Bill was proceeding when the dinner adjournament was taken.
During the evening, Mr Holyoake reported to the House'on his visit, specifically as it related to decisions on Vietnam, and a debate on foreign affairs which will be continued tonight. Last night the speakers were:
Government: Mr Holyoake, the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre), Sir LesLie Munro (Waipa), Mr G. A. Walsh (Tauranga). Opposition: Sir Walter Nash (Hutt), Mr A. J. Faulkner Mr H. L. J. May (Porirua), the deputy-Leader of the Opposition (Mr Watt).
