Public Transport
Sir, —The people of Christchurch should wake up before it is too late to the fact that in the present lay-out of the Square they have a valuable public transport centre. As thousands of cars pour on to the city streets, the usefulness of the private motor-car in the heart of the city must diminish, leading to a clogged and stagnant city. While the number of passengers carried by the bus has fallen under the vast increase in motor-cars, 1 think the loss is mainly on Saturday and Sunday, when private motor-cars hold all the advantages. From Monday to Friday the buses may be holding their own or gaining ground. The Transport Board should experiment with a "park and ride” bus round South Hagley Park and encourage the motorist to park on or near all bus routes and use the buses instead of their cars.—Yours, etc., C. FITZGERALD. July 13, 1965.
