EDINBURGH AWARDS
Christchurch girls were presented with Duke of Edinburgh silver awards by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning) at a ceremony on Saturday. They are 18-year-old Lesley Killengray, a Ranger Guide, and Shirley Wright, aged 16, who is a corporal in the 6th Christchurch Company of the Girls’ Life Brigade. The four sections in which the girls qualified were design for living, service, interests, and adventure.
Lesley chose “what to wear and where to wear it” as one project, and Shirley studied “gas in the home.” Lesley did a first-aid course and Shirley a child-care course for the “service” qualification. Reading was Lesley’s interest, and a week-end cycle trip with carefully-kept log book her adventure. Stamp collecting, and a week-end spent camping, with accompanying log, fulfilled Shirley’s requirements. Now both girls are working for their gold awards, which require a further set of more detailed projects under the four heads, as well as additional requirements. Mr Manning also presented five Duke of Edinburgh bronze awards, won by Sea Rangers Pamela Winchester, Christine Stock, Heather Allen, Anne Hancock and Sylvia Evans. Two guides, Victoria Lousisson (4th senior company) and Brenda Cromie (Hornby company) received Queen’s Guide awards.
