An American contender for the British Open golf championship on Saturday claimed the dubious record of scoring the highest total ever recorded for a qualifying round. The American, Walter Danecki, scored 221 for two rounds at Hillside, one of the qualifying courses. He failed by just "0 strokes to qualify.
Danecki took 108 strokes in his first round on Friday and 113 on Saturday.
Danecki, a postal employee, was congratulated when be handed in his 58, 55 —113 card. ”1 don’t Uke a quitter.” he said ‘‘l do not quit. I enjoy golf.
•'The ’British’ is the open and I came after the 'pot of go-Jd.’ I am disappointed but not ashamed.”
A total of 82 players have qualified to compete in the championships, due to start next Wednesday. Among these was R. R. Newdick, of New Zealand. with rounds of 73 and 74. Heading the qualifiers was F. S. Boobyer. of Britain, with 139
