SCHOOLS 9 RUGBY Three Tries In 5-Min. By Christchurch B.H.S.

The Christchurch Boys’ High School and Shirley Boys' High school first XVs played fist and open Rugby at the Stravan road ground on Saturday, when Christchurch won, 18-8. Shirley had the better of the. forward battle and gained a greater share of possession, but its backs had neither the pace nor the skill of their opposites Territorially the game was even, but Christchurch, in the five minutes before half-time, scored three tries, to gain a lead of 11 points. The teams were:—

Christchurch B.H.S—W. J Lewis: L. W. Jones, N. Hill, A W. Tweedie: R. Queree, L- G Legge (captain): D. R. PhUlipson: R. T. Hunter: R. A. McKensle. I. p. Armstrong. D. J. McKenzie, p. F. Nicholson (vicecaptain); A. K. BOulton, D. R. Smith, I. R. Henderson. Shirley B.H.S—A. J. Milne; B. P. Roberts. R. V. Paulin. D. W. Cope; W. A Robinson (vicecaptain), G: R. L. Langford: W M. Chappell; G. M. Woodley; A. J. Eason, G. D. V. Pulley, J. M. Campbell, C. J. Read; H. S .Anderson. G. B. Hood, M. J Toner (capt.l.

Nowhere was the superiority of the Christchurch backs more marked than in mid-field. Both Hill and Queree showed remarkable acceleration on the slippery ground and their strong running and eye for a gap bewildered the defence. Lewis, besides handling and kicking surely, twice retrieved difficult situations with his courageous rush-stopping. The Christchurch forwards lost the battle for possession hut never conceded defeat. D. J. McKenzie was a force in the line-outs and with Anflefson did good work in the fight R. A. McKenzie and R. T. Hunter were lively loose forwards. Shirley’s strength lay in the forwards and they were responsible for their team’s second spell resurgence. None played better than Toner.

Pulley. Anderson and Hood were solid workers in the tight and Read, as well as winning the ball consistently In the lineouts, showed speed In the open. Although given a good service by their half-back, Chappell, ’he Shirley backs moved slowly and their attacks were either stifled in mid-field or driven across Reid. Cope looked a lively •hree-quarters but had few opnortunltles. For Christchurch, tries were scored by Hill (two), Jonea and

Legge and Legge converted two: Toner and Hood scored tries for Shirley, one being converted by Paulin. Referee: Mr M. R. Barnett

St. Bede’s Superior

St. Bede’s scored a decisive 14-3 victory over Christ’s College in an excellent exhibition of Rugby.

The manner in which the vifctory was obtained was particularly meritorious Considering the heavy condition of the ground. The teams were;

Christ’s College: P. Hall, D. Pickering, D. Campbell; N. Armstrong. J. Wright: W. Grey: H Black; I. Johns, J. Dawson, J. Morris. D. Thompson: E. Harkness, D. Sheard, T. Morris.

St. Bede’s College.—J. Fenn; M. O’Reilly, B. Callanan. G. Connolly: W. McKay, C. Day; A. Tones; J. Ryan; K. Cowan. G McDonnell, P. Parish, G. Diedrichs; M. Burland. M. Ward. B Kelly. Connolly (two) and Jones scored tries for St. Bede’s while Jones converted one and Daykicked a field goal. Hall scored Christ College's try. The well-drilled forward pack of St. Bede's, which dominated possession, and an excellent combination behind the scrum dictated play for the greater part of the match. It would be hard to single out anyone in the St. Bede's pack as It was a fine team effort.

G. Jones was in outstanding form at half-back for St. Bede’s. The baeks ran and passed at speed and Connolly and D'Reilly were two likely looking wing three-quarters. Tenn.' at full-back,. was sound and handled excellently. In a beaten pack, which was never allowed to settle down, Johns and Black were prominent on defence and Morris toiled hard In the tight. The Christ's College back line received tew chances. It never functioned smoothly and Gebbie, at full-back, often missed taking the ball on the full. N. Armstrong made one or two strong breaks. Referee: Mr A. K. Taylor.
