RACING Trentham Candidates Risk Penalties Today

If victory goes the way of Kumai, Shakes or Tundra in the Donald Grant Memorial Handicap at Washdyke today it will probably earn them a rehandicap for the Whyte Handicap at Trentham next Saturday.

The rehandicap clause in the Wellington Racing Club's programme states that all handicaps are subject to the condition that the winner of any race after the declaration of weights —they were published last Tuesday—may be rehandicapped.

A penalty earned by Shakes or Tundra would not be nearly as bad as it would be for Kumai for they would still get into the rich Trentham mile with less weight than they will carry today. Shakes has 9-3 and Tundra 8-11 in the first leg of the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s double. Their respective weights in the Whyte Handicap are 8-9 and 8-4. Kumai will carry 10-o—his Whyte Handicap weight. But a penalty for him might not matter one way or the other for his trainer, H. A. Anderton. made it known this week if he goes a good race today he will probably be reserved for the major races for stayers on the later days at Trentham. Although Kumai, Shakes and Tundra will have solid backing—they are the only last start winners in the Donald Grant Memorial field —they will not dominate betting for there are plenty of others with sound form close up on their records. Hot Foot and Combination will have a strong Otago following and the same will apply to the Riccarton lightweights, Sabell and Cana-

diana. Etoile Este could be South Canterbury’s best Glenmorven will be the lone runner from D. P. Wilson’s Mosgiel stable in the Thomas Seaton Memorial Handicap, second leg of the double. Debater has dropped out of the field. Glenmorven is almost certain to be one of the favourites Otago trainers will saddle today. The others could he the consistent Final. Melody, an acceptor for the Caroline Maiden Stakes,' and Bastille, which will be trying to maintain an unbeaten record in the Beaconsfield Improvers’ Handicap. If Pee Wee runs up to his best form in the Winchester Maiden Stakes the meeting could start with a Riccarton victory. Compensate, A. E. Elworthy Memorial Hurdles, and Scent, Kingsdown Hack Handicap, could both be winners for Washdyke. They will both be trying for their second win in succession. The main race for jumpers will be the C. L. Orbell Memorial Steeples in which the Hazlett-owned stablemates, Koral and Collide, will probably dominate betting. The weather in South Canterbury has been mainly fine during the week but there has been little drying. The track, which received a thorough soaking last week-end, is bound to be soft.
