Y.W.C.A. CLUBS

Indoor Bowls And Fencing Indoor bowls and fencing clubs have been started at the Y.W.C.A, headquarters, meeting on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday evenings respectively. “We decided to start the indoor bowls club as there are a lot of older people, and housewives too, who are free in the afternoons,” said the programme director, Miss M Mangels. “The response has been very good:” The other club was primarily to introduce people to fencing, with lessons from two instructors. “We have a lot of success with our ballroom-dancing class,” Miss Mangels said. Four young people who learned to dance at the class had since won bronze medals at a studio, and another had been awarded a silver medal. The judo class was proving popular, with new enrolments continuously. The Y.M.C.A. judo tutor, Mrs E. Bryson, was now the holder of a black belt. The number attending the “coffee spot” each fortnight was disappointing, however. “It is a good opportunity for young people to meet, but they don't seem to be responding very well,” said Miss Mangels. Dancing. and various games, such as table tennis and darts were held during the evenings, and supper provided. Ohly about a dozen were attending, and a larger number would mean a greater variety of activities could be enjoyed.
