Needless Searches
(Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 2. The need for full-scale searches for petty thieves who escape from open prison or borstals is questioned by the Justice Department in its annual report The department says the escape of such a thief rarely calls for alarm and “one questions whether the expense of a full scale search is justified “New Zealand is a small isolated country and it is usually only a matter of time before the escaper is seen and apprehended.”
