MANY PAY TRIBUTES
Many famous cricketers yesterday paid tributes to Hammond: Sir Leonard Hutton: “1 think he was the finest cricketer I ever played with or against. I felt always a great joy and delight that 1 never experienced with any other batsman when I batted with him. “He made batting look so easy that I felt at times he
could have batted using a walking stick ” Stan McCabe: “Hammond was the greatest all-rounder of all time. He was the model cricketer. Everything he did. he did with the touch of a master." Harold Larwood: “He was a magnificent cricketer. We used to expect a ‘ton’ from him every innings, and more often than not he seemed to get it.” Bill O'Reilly: “Hammond certainly was the greatest English batsman of my time. He was a tough, hard, but always brilliant player." Sir Donald Bradman: “I played against him in the 20's and 30’s and thought of him as a very great cricketer “I have never seen a batsman so strong on the off side. As a slip fielder, he ranks as one of the greatest, and he was a much better bowler than given credit for."
