Seeking Ship In Which St. Paul Was Shipwrecked
A group of young Britons, calling themselves the Mediterranean Underwater Research Unit will soon begin searching for the ship in which St. Paul was shipwrecked in Malta 19 centuries ago.
“We have a good idea where the wreck, or what is left of it, may be” said Mr John Haddow, of Dunoon, Argyllshire, who formed the research unit two years ago when he was posted to Royal Air Force Station, Luqa. The rest of the team are also serving members of the Royal Air Force in Malta, though the research unit is a private venture entirely unconnected with the service. The other members of the team are: Mr Alex Carrie, of Grantham, Lincolnshire, who is assistant managing director of the Unit; Mr Alan Watson, of Newark, Nottinghamshire, who edits the units magazine
“Sea Horse;” Mr W. Burborough of Arnold, Nottinghamshire; Mr Barry Trigger, a Londoner; and Mr Terry Ball, from Grantham, Lincolnshire.
They will have the assistance of three Maltese underwater swimmers. All the men are fine underwater swimmers. They have already recovered from the sea-bed off Salina amphorae which they have presented to the Maltese National Museum. The team has spent about £lOOO on equipment. This equipment will be useful when the real “assault” on the wreck, or what pieces of it may remain, get under way in the summer. When Mr Haddow and Mr Carrie leave the Royal Air Force in about 18 months they hope to turn professional and undertake similar expeditions all over the world.
