MANAPOURI PROJECT

Help From Navy (N.Z. Pres» Alin—Copyright) DUNEDIN, June 21. Three hydrographic personnel in H.M.N.Z.S. Lachlan, the Navy’s survey ship, did not leave with her when she sailed for Wellington at 8 a.m. today after a three-day stay in Dunedin.

They went instead to Invercairgill to assist in surveying work in connexion with the Manapouri hydro-electric project. The Navy assisted in survey work for the project about a year ago and the three men, Lieutenant-Commander I. S. Munro, Lieutenant F. G. George and Petty-Offlcer J Sayers, are to assist in further hydrographic work, which is expected to take a few days. “The work is simply a delineation of the contours of the bottom of the Mararoa and Waiau rivers,” a spokesman for the project said. From this an idea could be gained if the Waiau river could be used in the distant future for hydro-power as part of the scheme. The surveying did not relate to present actual construction or projected work.
