Labour Party Holds Debutante Ball
Six debutantes made their curtsies before the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nordmeyer) and Mrs Nordmeyer at the debutante ball held by the Papanui branch of the Labour Party in the Winter Garden last evening. Presented by the secretary of the Papanui branch (Mrs M. McCreanor). the debutantes were Misses Nancy Mathison (who is the granddaughter of Mr J. Mathison, M.P.), Denise Curragh, Margaret Moss, Linda Nickolson, Diane Hillier and Sharon Maguire. Mrs Nordmeyer presented posies to each girl on behalf of the branch. She wore a slim-fitting black gown, which featured a silver lame trimming.
Mrs McCreanor’s gown of midnight blue French brocade was designed with a square neckline, and a self-made rose finishing the short-sleeved fitting bodice. The skirt had a straight front panel and back fullness.
Specially-invited guests included the Mayor and Mayoress of Christchurch (Mr and Mrs G. Manning); Mr J. Mathison, M.P., and Mrs Mathison; Mr M. A. Connelly, M.P., and Mrs Connelly; Mr
N. E. Kirk, M.P., and Mrs Kirk; Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., and Mrs Macfarlane.
The silver fern emblem of the Labour Party was featured with massed displays of pot plants.
The ball committee comprised the branch president (Mr E. McCreanor), the secretary (Mrs M. McCreanor), Mesdames I. Rosevear, J. Nash, M. B. Maguire, J. Wright, H. Harris and Mr A. Mathison.
